Q: Does insurance pay for your service?
A: Non-medical homecare is very similar to Assisted Living. In most cases, our clients pay privately for our services. If the care recipient has Long Term Care (LTC) Insurance, that policy may pay for our services. All LTC benefits are unique (deductibles, waiting periods, maximums, etc), so contact your LTC provider to verify your policy’s benefits. Medicare does not cover this type of service. 

Many U.S. Veterans also have a benefit that pays for our services. Feel free to call our office for your Veteran’s Specialist’s contact information.

Q: What are your rates?
A: Our rates are hourly, and are determined by the level of care that is required in each situation. Our rates include all payroll, payroll taxes, bonding, insurance, and worker’s compensation insurance. The hours required to properly care for your loved one will be based on their needs assessed on the interview and on an ongoing basis.

Q: Are there minimum hours of service required?
A: Yes, we have minimum hours required. Minimums are very helpful in providing quality, consistent care to our clients. Caregivers rely upon these hours for their livelihood, and a consistent schedule leads to consistent care. Our current minimum is two hours per shift, though in some areas our minimum is higher (subject to change).

Q: Are your services tax-deductible?
A: Eldercare is considered dependent care (similar to childcare). Contact your accountant for more information on requirements and deduction limits.

Q: Which Long Term Care (LTC) Insurance Companies recognize you as a provider?

A: We go through an application process with each LTC Insurance Company. We have gained approval from each LTC Insurance Company to whom we have applied.

The Visiting Angels Westplex Family Learning Center is a vast educational resource for families with a loved one who is beginning to need care. The Family Learning Center offers over 50 courses relating to the roles, responsibilities and challenges surrounding the care of our elderly loved ones. Topics of our family courses range from understanding signs and symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease, managing and coping with challenging behaviors, daily care skills, First Aid and even information on how to create engaging activities for your family member.

This free on-line resource is only available to our current clients and families.

Our Mission: To Improve the Quality of Life for Dementia Sufferers and Their Families

 Most often, after an initial diagnosis of Alzheimer's or a related dementia illness, families are faced with difficult decisions about providing care for their loved one. Working parents with children are faced with new stresses to balance work and family. Families who are separated by great distances must make hard choices to provide care. Sometimes nursing homes or special care retirement centers seem to be the only options. You do have a choice and we can help.

Visiting Angels non-medical home care services allow your loved one to maintain the independence of their daily routines and familiar surroundings. We can help your loved one avoid the emotional trauma of leaving their cherished home while helping cope with the dementia illness and providing the respite care so important for the family.

As part of a collaborative relationship formed by Visiting Angels and the Alzheimer's Foundation of America, Visiting Angels, has become the first national non-medical senior home care provider in North America to offer an AFA sponsored formal training and qualification program for our caregivers who care for individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and related illnesses.

Eric J. Hall, AFA’s chief executive officer, praised Visiting Angels for stepping up to provide Dementia Care Professionals of America (DCPA) training to its healthcare professionals. “As the incidence of Alzheimer’s disease continues to increase, it is critical that organizations recognize the importance of setting high quality standards for healthcare providers. These efforts will go a long way toward providing optimal care to those in need.”

Working through the DCPA, a new membership division of the AFA for healthcare professionals, Visiting Angels’ agencies across North America will be training and qualifying selected caregivers to provide service to individuals and families trying to cope with this disease.

You Are In Charge

You are in charge of everything. Because we are a non-medical agency and not a nursing agency, Visiting Angels will not dictate to you what your schedule is to be (i.e. what time to wake up, when to bathe, meal schedules etc.). Before you hire a Home Caregiver for yourself or a loved one, make sure you determine that they provide these 11 Imperative Qualifications.

What to Look For What to Look Out For

An agency that lets you choose your caregiver. We match your needs to the best possible caregiver, bring the caregiver to your home and ask you to participate in the selection process. You can choose the caregiver that you and your loved one will feel comfortable with.

An agency that just assigns you a caregiver. You need to be able to choose the person that your loved one will be spending time with, not just be stuck with the one an agency has available.

An Agency that hires only experienced caregivers. At Visiting Angels we will only refer caregivers who have the necessary experience to fulfill your individual needs. An Agency that hires and then ?trains? its caregivers. A quick company training program never takes the place of an experience caregiver.
An Agency that requires 2 interviews, detailed references (and checks them!). Our caregivers provide references to us from sources we can trust (other homecare agencies, hospitals, nursing facilities, churches, hospices, assisted living communities, etc.). An Agency that does only 1 interview.
Look out for agencies that require just a single
minimal ?interview?.
An Agency that screens its caregivers on personality traits. Visiting Angels emphasizes the intangible traits of the caregiver, such as caring personality, which will mean so much in your day-to-day experience in working with them An Agency that has no screening process to determine caregivers' personality traits. You want someone taking care of your loved one that is caring, compassionate and thoughtful.
An Agency that does extensive background checks. Visiting Angels does extensive background checks on each and every person that will be in contact with your loved one. An Agency that does not do background checks. Make sure the agency does not simply take the information from a caregiver's application and fail to verify it.
An Agency that is bonded and insured. Visiting Angels is bonded and insured. This gives you the peace of mind that a trustworthy individual will be in your or your loved one's home. An Agency that is not licensed, bonded and insured. This is a definite signal to look elsewhere.
An Agency that monitors its caregivers. At Visiting Angels we have a unique system of continued personalized contacts through telephone check-ins and home visits as long as the caregiver is in your home. An Agency that doesn't make surprise in-home visits. If a caregiver is not monitored, you may be in danger of a caregiver becoming lax or assuming too much liberty in their decisions.
An Agency that adjusts to your schedule. It is our job at Visiting Angels to fit the schedule to your needs. We work in conjunction with the family and develop individualized programs to manage your daily needs. You are in charge of setting the schedule (i.e. what time to get up, meals, bathing, etc.). We will not dictate to you what your schedule should be. An Agency that tells you when they are available. You need to be assured that a caregiver is there when you have the need, not when it is convenient.
An Agency that is flexible and willing to change schedules. At Visiting Angels, changes are easily accomplished with as little as a week's notice. Our philosophy is to make the schedule work for the family, not the agency. You come first – your needs, your requests, your schedule. We will do everything possible to make sure the schedule you want is the schedule you get. An Agency that is unwilling to change schedules once they are set. Look out for the agency that tells you “what is best for your loved one”. Only you know that and you should be the one dictating what is needed, not the agency. Make sure the agency is flexible and determine how long it will take if changes need to be made.
An Agency that quickly responds to your needs. At Visiting Angels, generally services can be provided within a 48-hour period. We know when your needs arise, they are often urgent and we do everything we can to respond immediately. An Agency that cannot respond immediately. Don't let them make up excuses to buy time. If they do that when you are looking to hire someone, it may give you a good indication of how they will respond to your other changing needs and requests.
